On May 14th, 2022 we secured our first Emerald Cup win in the topical category. For the KQ team, THIS IS A BIG DEAL! Our founders have long respected the Emerald Cup for the seriousness and purist nature of this competition and for the fact its judges are long-time members of the cannabis community.

When we entered this year’s competition, we honestly thought the THC lube winning was a long shot, but we believed if the judges just got to try it, then they too would understand how special and needed this product is to the California cannabis consumers.

We caught up with Kush Queen CEO, Olivia Alexander to get the tea on the lube, and Kush Queen’s Emerald Cup win!

Kush Queen: As a legacy cannabis company, tell us what winning an Emerald Cup for THC lube means to you?

Olivia Alexander: Honestly, I started crying when I found out. The Emerald Cup is the one competition that is still so important to the California cannabis industry because of what it stands for and the values it represents. The Emerald Cup is about the real and honest truth of cannabis and the current marketplace. It's a no-nonsense, no-frills, and no-bullshit type of award. I know the judging is taken incredibly seriously. 

All my idols and mentors have won Emerald Cups, so winning feels like a big stamp of approval. Making a lube in a market where people are mainly looking for flower and to be honest, products that don’t cost $50, has not been easy. But I knew we were making something that was truly needed, innovative, and of great quality. 

To be acknowledged is an honor. We spend a lot of time and energy making our products when a lot of other brands are just white labeling. For us at Kush Queen, this win is a pivotal moment in our brand that we don't take for granted. 

KQ: Back in the summer of 2017 when Kush Queen released the THC Lube, did you know this was a future Emerald Cup-winning product?

OA: Once I realized we could make a lube that delivered nearly instant effects, is water-based, AND latex safe - I knew we had something special. Plus, at the time, the only lube that was available was just infused coconut oil and not a real lube made for f**king, lol! 

For Kush Queen to be in the company of the best in cannabis is all we ever set out to do. Our Amplifi™ Nanotechnology is what makes this lube so amazing, and I’m excited it’s finally getting the attention and notoriety that it deserves. 

KQ: I love the tagline on the THC lube box, THC for the V, the D, & the B - cheeky, but also feels very intentional. Why is inclusivity so important at Kush Queen?

OA: Inclusivity is a big part of what Kush Queen was founded on. Back in the early days, some of the original inspiration for creating the brand was because I didn't see myself or my experiences represented in cannabis. At the heart of the plant, cannabis is inclusive. I still ask myself all the time, why do most brands only cater to a select demo? Most likely, it's because of who's in charge and what matters to them. 

At Kush Queen, we believe all people deserve access to plant medicine. That translates from our ethos down to our product development and packaging. When developing our THC lube, we thought a lot about how all types of people use lube, so we designed a product that *mostly everyone could enjoy safely.

KQ: I'm sure you've been told some TMI lube stories over the years, can you share a lube story that really blew you away?

OA: There are 2 types of lube stories. Ones that are touching, like hearing from people in pain or from those who couldn't enjoy penetrative sex of all types. To hear how life-changing our THC lube has been for them really brings me to tears. 

But then there are the truly outrageous stories that you really can't make up. We had a brand ambassador out on a patient appreciation day, and a woman was literally buying 5 or 6 bottles of the lube. Apparently, she couldn't live without it, and she wore it like a perfume on her kitty. She shared that it gave her some extra "Big PURR Energy" before big meetings and at her job. I mean, whatever works, right?
