A Big Win For Cannabis

Election 2020

cannabis legalization 2020

This election season has been a roller coaster, to say the least. Our country remains polarized in a way that feels unlike anything we have ever experienced in our lifetime. One thing for certain is that the biggest winner of the 2020 election is psychotropic plants.

Now, more Americans can (legally) come together to light up in celebration of the progress made for our favorite plant medicines. Tuesday was a huge win for cannabis and drug policy reform nationwide, so we’ve broken it down for you.

Cannabis Legalization Winners

The progress of cannabis continues nationwide with legalization for adult use passing in Montana, South Dakota, Arizona, and New Jersey. Regulatory framework can take years, but Tuesday was the first step for these four states in legalizing cannabis.

Fun Fact: New Jersey saw a spike of Google searches for “how to roll a joint” after Tuesday’s election results were called.

Mississippi and South Dakota passed laws legalizing medical cannabis. Now fewer than 10 states have no legal cannabis framework, although some have decriminalized small amounts for personal use, and another handful or so allow CBD oil only.

Psychedelics in D.C.

The progress didn’t just stop at cannabis. Big wins for psychedelics and drug policy reform were made in Washington D.C. and Oregon. Prior to the 2020 presidential election, decriminalization of psychedelics was limited to a few cities across the US, like Denver, Oakland, Santa Cruz, and Ann Arbor.

On Tuesday, D.C. residents voted to decriminalize psychedelic plants and fungi, including psilocybin mushrooms. Now, possession of organic psychedelics has been deemed the lowest priority for law enforcement. D.C. is now the first jurisdiction on the east coast to reform psychedelic drug policy and was among the first to demand legal access to medical cannabis.

Statewide Drug Decriminalization in Oregon

Meanwhile, Oregon not only decriminalized all drugs, including psychedelics and “hard” drugs, like cocaine and heroin, the state will also regulate administration of psilocybin in therapeutic settings. Soon licensed therapists in Oregon will be able to legally provide psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for a variety of conditions. Across the state, law enforcement will no longer treat possession of drugs for personal use as a criminal offence. Additionally, Oregon’s cannabis tax revenue will fund optional addiction recovery services for those found in possession of drugs for personal use.

With votes still being counted in the presidential election, it feels like we’re in a waiting game for the ages. Now more than ever, it's ultra important to prioritize your self-care and make space for celebrating what you can, when you can.
